....are lazy.
Liv and I went to the symphony last night with my sister and left poor Bing at home to oversee the plumber who is replacing the pipes in our shower. We are getting a new green shower put in and I am leery already. We not only have a water saving faucet, but it is also going to be on a five minute timer so that it shuts off after 5 minutes thus enabling us to not waste water.
This is going to be so not fun when I need to use my five minute conditioner when I am taking a shower. I will have to make it a four minute one, I suppose. There was no arguing with Bing on this one. She is intent on making us green.
So, Liv and I got home late and then I stayed up late reading my new book, so slept in until nearly 11.
Bliss.
It is gorgeous here on the prairie. All of our windows are open and the air is balmy and sweet. We all took Socks for a long walk, Bing jogging ahead of us and Liv, Socks and me meandering slowly, stopping to gape at the red bud trees blooming and the first shoots of tulips peeping out of the ground.
We came home and went out to take a look at how the garden soil fared over the long cold winter. It looks surprisingly good. Just needs a good tilling and it will be ready for us to bring up all the baby seedlings nestling in their beginner cartons in the basement. First Saturday in May is our plan to get them in.
And Liv will be home all summer, with the exception of ten days in early June when she visits her father who is teaching a summer course in Paris. So...I will have my co-gardener. I missed her so last summer, while tending our garden by myself, my wide brimmed hat square on my head, gardening gloves shoved in my back pocket. My Liv will be here to help this year.
Then, we all decided to go to a movie this afternoon. Liv wanted to see The Adjustment Bureau. I wanted (so badly!) to see Jane Eyre. Bing was dying to see Source Code. So, we put our choices in a hat and shook it and let Liv draw the name.
Guess we are going to see this:
Sighing. I suppose it will be okay. And I knew that if my movie won, Bing would be squirming with boredom throughout the whole thing, so s'pose I need to be a good sport.
But, I DID e-mail my niece and ask her if she wanted to go see my movie some evening this week....
After the movie, we will pick up a pizza and come home and maybe even get to eat it outside. Our spring patio furniture is still cooped up in the shed outside, but I don't think I would mind sitting on the back steps enjoying the succulent Spring breeze.
Tonight is Amazing Race. I am rooting for Big Easy and Flight Time.
Did I mention that next weekend, we are taking Liv and her new bff, Jackie to see these guys.? Tickets were very expensive, but it will be so much fun. And Jackie will then spend the night, which means that Bing will make pancakes for breakfast next Sunday.
Life is pretty sweet here on the prairie. How is it in your neck of the woods?
And hey? Has anyone seen the production of Jersey Boys? My sister wants me to go see them with her this summer and I said I would, even though I have no idea what this is even about.
I did this so that if Lee DeWyze ever comes to Omaha, she will owe me one and have to go with me. You're welcome, Bing.

Source Code sucked.
Just my opinion.
And I see about 2 movies a week.
Love them.
Jane Eyre should be great.
Oh my hell!! You HAVE to go see Jersey Boys!! YOU HAVE TO!!! It was one of my favorite shows of all time!! I saw it with a big group of my family. It was like being at a family reunion for us. It may not be appropriate for Liv, though, as there are MANY f-bombs dropped during the show. Almost as many as I drop on a typical day in the ghetto. tee hee!
It's based on the life story of Frankie Valli. The music is AWESOME. Well, that is, if you like Frankie Valli! We all were singing along the whole time, probably pissing off all the people sitting around us.
It ran here in Chicago for a long time. I actually had intended to see it again before it left, but sadly, I never did. You and your sisters will have a great time, I'm sure.
Oh, and I forgot...
FIVE MINUTE SHOWERS!?!?!? There is NO way I could do that. It takes me longer than 5 minutes to just WET&WASH my hair! Yikes! I suppose I could do the body washing in 5 minutes, but I'd have to go wash my hair in the laundry tub or something.
Glad spring is finally there for you.
Water used in homes in urban areas is rarely "wasted" water; a more appropriate term might be "rented" or "used." It is not "consumed." Gray water and sewage is returned to a treatment plant, processed and returned to the system. Consumed water is water that we use that does not return to the system, ie, watering our lawns, washing our cars, etc. If you take long showers, it might be said you are "wasting money" because you pay for the use of the water and the energy used to heat it. If, however, a long shower is a luxury you enjoy, the cost of a 20 minutes shower is not that substantial. In fact, I predict you will see minimal change in your water or heating bill from your green shower.
A rain barrel is a great way to capture water that is "wasted" - meaning water that goes into the storm system and back 'out to sea', usually carrying the enviromental pollutants it encounters as runoff (lawn fertilizers, pollutants from traffic, etc.) A rain barrel can provide water for your garden, lawn, potted plants and flower beds. (It is incredible how much water is captured from 1" of rain from an average sized roof.) Couple a rain barrel or two with a green roof (living plants/soil that filter the water).... now you are talking about 'saving' water and saving money!
Sounds like a lovely Sunday for all of you! Whenever I go to the movies with family and we have divergent choices, we all go see the movies we want to see and then meet up afterwards to talk about it:)
Humidity is beginning to hit Houston so no balmy breezes for me. I am not happy about this. NOT HAPPY. But such is life down here in Texas.
Have a great day Maria, sounds like the plans you have will make it great anyway:)
Can't help you with the Jersey Boys except to say if you're a Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, then you'll be all in. I hear it is a fun show.
The last couple of days have been, to use your word, bliss.
A friend saw Source Code. Theire reaction? heh
Another saw Adjustment Bureau and their reaction? Disappointment and anger.
5 minutes... no. No, no, no. Speaking only for myself: I recycle like a fiend. I compost. I turn lights off. I use the more economical car whenever remotely possible even though I don't like it that much. I don't buy bottled water. I refuse to wear clothes that have to be dry cleaned, because I know what hell it is to get dry cleaning chemicals -- and they are carcinogens -- out of groundwater. My whole career was in environmental protection, so, y'know, I walk the walk. But nobody had better ask me to restrict my shower time (which probably isn't much more than 5 minutes anyway) to 5 minutes. Those moments under the hot water are one of my life's primary pleasures, and I do not hog them, but I will not curtail them.
I think it's not too much to ask.
Make sure you know how to override that timer!
Five-minute showers would not work for me, no matter how well-intentioned. My hair alone takes at least a couple minutes to wet through as there is a lot of it, and rinsing takes even longer. Plus I like to stand under the hot water to ease some of my aches since I have no one to massage me. I would consider a shower that turns itself off a personal affront, and get quite cranky as a result. But good luck! You're a brave girl, Maria, and a much better citizen than I.
5 minutes is doable, because I have super short hair. But the cut off sounds harsh! Sounds like Bing is on a mission.
Sandy shoes...
I DO know how to use the override on the shower. I privately asked the plumber to show me how to do it and it is quite simple. And I intend to use it when necessary. Last night was rather gnarly between Bing and me. She is fighting with our tile guy over sealant (she wants "green" sealant which the tile guy says is "pure shit.") I told her to stop being so stubborn and called her a "bossy betty." She and I did not kiss goodnight last night. Probably will get a blog out of this anyway...
Oh phew. As long as there's override potential, you need never feel the panic I clearly did at the mere notion of a shower cut short :-).
Here's hoping for effective sealant and renewed domestic harmony!
I used to live in the desert, and I know how to be extremely frugal with water. It's not how long the shower lasts, it's how much water is consumed. It is possible to be completely clean in less than 5 gallons of water but you need to turn the water off while soaping up, etc. Still, there is nothing like hot water to loosen up these aging joints...
Now I live in the Pacific Northwest and have way too much water!
5 minute showers? No, ma'am. Won't do it. I recycle every damn thing I can, we have a rain barrel and we compost. We take canvas shopping bags everywhere we go. I drive a very fuel efficient cars. However, I need a 10 minute shower, dammit. No more, but no less either!
I've not seen Jersy Boys, but my parents have a couple of times and they LOVE it. My dad burned the soundtrack for me and it sounds like a really fun show. Enjoy it!
Source Code is totally Mr. EM's kind of movie. I'm more of a Jane Eyre girl myself. That's why we rarely see movies together. We should meet for a double-date somewhere between Omaha and St. Louis sometime. We can see some fantastic independent film and they can watch whatever action piece of crap they want to see.
We had a warmer than normal, somewhat humid weekend, but it didn't rain and that was good enough for me! Laundry hung on the clothesline, kids wore themselves out playing outdoors all day both days and I enjoyed a magazine and a glass of Moscato on the front porch. Delightful!
The globetrotters are very entertaining; you will love it.
Your weather sounds wonderful...it is already summer in Florida. my face melted this morning. :0
