Comfort Food

I just got back from the grocery store.

Bing would not be happy with the contents of my cart. When she is here, good luck finding any processed food in the house. It is ALL homemade and fresh.

When I am in charge of meals, we tend to go out a lot, order in a lot and if I must cook, well....let's just say that I didn't buy that giant box of Cap'n Crunch for nothin'.

As I was putting the groceries away, it occurred to me that I must be depressed because there are a hell of a lot of my comfort foods in those bags. Since Liv's father is here, I have a few of his favorites too, but he is not that different than me. We have many of the the same food likes. Plus, he is used to eating in tents a lot, so he could live on slim jims, cold cereal, granola bars and berries. Liv's favorite foods all involve going to a restaurant because I have no idea how to make oysters on the half shell (her birthday dinner request, I am serious..) She also likes sushi, salmon and pomegranates.

How did I get this child? I mean, she is like a high maintenance girl when it comes to food. I almost feel like throwing up when I watch her slurp up those oysters.

So, yeah, she suffers when dinner is left to me. Except when we have tomato soup and grilled cheese, which we both love. She also likes the way I cook eggs (not too goopy, not too hard) and I do make a pineapple smoothie that she particularly enjoys.

So. There in my cart. Comfort food.

MY TOP TEN COMFORT FOODS.

1) Mashers. This involves a wee bit of cooking, but it is so easy that Socks could make it. You just peel four Idaho potatoes, slice them into rounds and boil them in salt water for about twenty minutes. Then you smash them with an implement that I call "the potato smasher" but probably has a nicer name. Put in some butter and salt and keep smashing and there you go. It is wonderful. I love a bowl of nice mashers when I am feeling blue.

2) Tomato soup and grilled cheese. This is another easy dish, but something about the way the grilled cheese tastes so exquisite when you dunk it into the hot tomato soup...ahhh. So smooth and crunchy all at once and this meal is perfect on a rainy day.

3) Oatmeal. I am picky about my oatmeal. I like Mother's Oatbran. Made not with water or milk, but CREAM. And then I like to top it with brown sugar and raisins. Sometimes when I have had a hard day at work, even if it is 100 freakin' degrees outside, I just crave a bowl of oatmeal. I eat it slowly, with a good book propped up in front of my bowl and no interruptions from children, dogs or spouses, please. Let me eat my damn oatmeal and then ask me.

4) Black licorice. I adore those nice long strings of black licorice. I like the way you have to chew a lot to get it all soft and mushy. And then, you swallow, and it is like someone giving you a hug or listening to you rant or letting you get in their driving lane when yours is cutting off.

5) Dill pickles. Again, I'm picky. I only like Claussen's pickles (they are in a fridge case at the supermarket) and I only like the nice big slurpy ones. Once in a while, I will be okay with one of those really big pickles that you get in pickle barrels in old stores, but I find that Claussen's work just fine. One of my favorite things to do is eat pickles and read. I think I have more pickle juice stains on my books than is a good idea, but at least this way no one wants to borrow them.

6) Lay's BBQ potato chips. Again, picky, picky. They have to be Lays. I like them crunchy and thin. And if I find one that is slightly burned, GOD. SO GOOD. I like the way they crunch so sharply and leave your mouth feeling just a little bit tingly with hickory taste. I never buy the big bags because Bing detests potato chips because they are processed and very, very bad for you and Liv just isn't interested in junk food. She likes fruit for a treat, is crazy about frozen green grapes. Again, how did this wonderful eater come from my side of the family? We all revel in junk food.

7) Long johns with caramel icing. Our grocery store just opened a Krispy Kreme bakery. Every time Bing and I shop together, I allow myself to buy just one. Again. Bing would rather die than put that trash into her body and you guessed it, Liv doesn't really like doughnuts. She thinks they are too sweet and says they make her feel "throw-uppy." I think they are both nuts. I ADORE biting into a nice warm long john and feeling that creamy filling squirt into my mouth. I don't even mind when I bite down and some falls on my shirt. That's fine. I'll just bring the shirt right up to my mouth and lick it off. Socks really likes licking my fingers when I have finished a long john and I suspect that he would like them just as much as I do, but I don't dare give him one for fear that he would start running around like a crazy dog on a sugar high. Because that is EXACTLY what I feel like when I finish one. And I only eat a half long john at a time because if I don't, my blood sugar would go through the roof and I would go into a diabetic coma.

8) Thanksgiving dinner. There is nothing on our Thanksgiving dinner table that I don't like. And it is my choice for a birthday dinner. Hot roast turkey with stuffin' with raisins and oysters. Mashers. Turkey gravy with those little giblets chopped up in it. Hot rolls dripping with butter. Corn on the cob. Sweet potato pie. Black olives. Pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Green beans with that crunchy onion topping. And then the next day, you get to make a turkey pot pie with the leftover turkey, stuffin', mashers and olives. God, just roll me away from the dinner table.

9) Fried chicken. Preferably from KFC. Extra crunchy. I also like the Shake and Bake coated chicken. ("It's Shake and Bake, and I helped!!") My mother used to make chicken that she put in a big bowl full of buttermilk in the fridge for a couple of hours and then she dunked it in flour, pepper and smashed corn flakes. I still love that, although I bet I haven't had it in ten years since I don't cook much and Bing would not approve of the dunking in corn flakes business. And I only get Shake and Bake chicken when my sister makes it because Bing once took a look at the ingredients on the Shake and Bake box and asked me point blank if I had a death wish. She also told me that as far as she was concerned it was child abuse to feed it to Liv, so well...nope. We don't have Shake and Bake in our house. Well....um....we do now. I plan to make it for dinner tomorrow night. Or...well...I have Tinton (Liv's father) talked into making it. Hopefully, it won't linger on my breath for days or anything, because I swear if Bing smelled it on me, she might consider leaving me for a nice healthy girl who doesn't poison her body.

10) And last, but not least, Peanut butter toast. I feel like peanut butter just makes any bad day better. I like mine extra crunchy and I am partial to Peter Pan, although I will eat any kind of peanut butter, any time. And Bing has no qualms with buying all natural peanut butter, so I don't have to sneak it. I have been known to take a table spoon and load it with peanut butter and then take it outside to savor while star gazing on the back steps. But, I like it best on slightly burned toast. With a big cup of chai tea.

Of course, there are many, many other foods that I find very comforting:

Apple martinis
Vanilla malts
Velveeta cheese on a Ritz cracker.
Chocolate covered cherries.
White chocolate chip cookies.
Cream of chicken soup.
Blueberry muffins smothered with honey butter.
A big bowl of vanilla bean ice cream with butterscotch topping and nuts.
Chicken fried steak.
Hamburger and black olive pizza.

You may have noticed that there were very few vegetables or fruits on my list. And considering that I grew up on a farm, you would think that I should know better. I actually LIKE a lot of fruits and vegetables and my garden is fairly bursting with them, but well...no...they aren't my comfort foods. Well, maybe corn on the cob. But, only in August. Only from Nebraska and Iowa, fresh off the cob and bought from a farmer who grew it him or herself. Smear that sucker with butter and salt and lots of pepper and boy howdy, we are talking weepingly good.

I like strawberries a great deal too. Most fruits. Not melons so much, but the rest of the fruits are fine with me.

So, I'm curious. What are your comfort foods?

Wow... I pretty much agree with most of your list. Sorry for being such a long lurker and not commenting in awhile. I am actually in the US right now..talk about comfort food. I am at my bro's house on my own...so today I made chili (from a can) and rice. The hospital where my mother is at is actually pretty good. They had turkey and mash potatoes and then they had an open-faced meatloaf sandwich today... YUM! I guess those kinds of comfort foods are chilis, beans, mashed potatoes, etc... I don't know if these are comfort foods or just stuff that I can't back in JP. LOL... I also bought a can of campbells pork & beans... something that I havent had since I was in Oregon!!!! gads....

my daddy's chili beans (very hot, best with beer even though I'm not much of a beer drinker,) my granny's creamed potatoes (whipped smooth with butter, sour cream and half & half,) fried liver pudding with a smooshed egg (boiled and smooshed over butter,) Mr. P's Pepperoni Pizzas (with the little square pepperonis chock full of preservatives, a steaming cup of coffee, a shot of Crown Royal, Hershey's Mint Chocolate ice cream, apple juice, meat loaf, country style steak with thick brown gravy, biscuits (thick fluffy ones with sausage or country ham and last but not least, marshmallows.

I make you look like a health nut. :-)

Bread and butter, doughnuts, chocolate, homemade chocolate chip cookies, made with oatmeal and pecans. Basically anything soft and either sweet or fatty. That is comfort for me.

Tuna casserole; grilled chese sandwich (bread griilled on both sides) with sliced tomato liberally salted and peppered; baked potato with butter, salt and pepper, ham, cheese, green onions, and sour cream, salt and pepper potato chips, Cinnabon cinnamon rolls; just about any chocolate cake; frito pie (fritoes, chili, cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato, sour cream; tacos; new england clam chowder!, a great sandwich or hamburger. I too love veggies and fruit, so my diet isn't as unhealthy as it sounds. I believe in moderation in all the things. Eating (supposedly) healthily has become too complicated! It shouldn't be so hard.

What you call Candies, but we call them sweets here in the UK. I'm not bothered by chocolate, I just love any sugar coated, teeth rotting sweets, and I'll eat them till I feel sick.

My comfort foods are; mashed potatoes with sausages and a little onion gravy, what the Poms call 'bangers and mash,' fried rice, peanut paste and butter between two Sao(a kind of cracker)biscuits, apples and potato chips. I like them plain and thin, though crinkle cut will do at a pinch.

Eggplant parm. Simple homemade cupcakes - from the box. Baked potatoes with butter and sour cream.

And most of things on your list (Though I like my Lays to be Sour Cream and Onion!)

When my son was diagnosed with his eating disorder, we had to come up with foods with an extremely high caloric intake so that he could eat smaller portions but still get the calories he needed. This has NOT been good for our parental waistlines (and I'm sure Bing would have heart failure!), but you do what you have to do for your kid.

In this midst of this, I discovered a decadent recipe for homemade macaroni and cheese, made with Velveeta. I'm sure millions of people are already aware of this concoction, but it was a gold mine to me--thick and gooey and loaded with comfort. And one serving made up an entire meal's calories! I still like to make it once in awhile, and I very much enjoy it. Then, I take a 10 mile hike!

I also enjoy peanut butter on Ritz crackers topped with M and M's. Man, I could eat about a hundred of those.

Most of my comfort foods include cookies and sweets. I've got a horrible sweet tooth, so that's when I feel most indulged. Oreos or homemade chocolate chip cookies with a big glass of milk. MMMMmmmmm....

But my mother used to make goulash (she called it that) with just ground beef and small, cut-up potatoes in it. It was delicious, and I haven't had it since she passed away in 2000. What I wouldn't give for that recipe!

"The sun warms the valley on the Newfoundland coast, I'll have oatmeal for breakfast with some peanut butter toast...", that's a song on one of my boys' For the Kids cd's and they both love it.

Anyway, I too love black licorice...to the point that I hide it in a desk drawer from the rest of the family. I don't even know if my boys like it, but I don't want to risk having to share it with them. Mr. EM likes it, but not like I do and he doesn't mind that I hoard it. I also love grilled cheese and tomato soup...so, so very wonderfully warm and comforting.

My other comfort foods would be movie theater popcorn, Breyer's chocolate ice cream (I love all ice cream, but Breyer's has the very best chocolate) and a thick, cheesy, piping-hot vegetable lasagna...with marinara sauce, NOT alfredo. Alfredo sauce is fine, but not on my comfort lasagna. Oh yeah, and Cheetoh's...gotta have my Cheetoh's.

Most of the time I tend to be like Bing about food, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, lots of whole grain and homemade, always no meat. But we all have our weaknesses and those are mine.

I have been addicted to chocolate donuts since I was pregnant and it is still my No 1 comfort food 15 years later.

I love chocolate and KFC too, especially the gravy. I just love food full stop and as long as I'm eating I will always be happy.

Comfort foods: fried eggs with runny yolks and really good, buttery, crunchy toast to smoosh into the yolks. Or a mashed potato with a ton of butter and salt and pepper, mixed with peas (the frozen kind, not canned, warmed when you drain the potato) and canned chicken. Mix it all together and it's like Grandma is standing there behind you. Also giant chewy oatmeal cookies with lots of raisins, Fosters oil cans,a gin and tonic with fresh lime, and a huge bowl of fresh Colorado cherries that are so perfectly ripe you could weep. Oh, and any kind of pizza is comforting, even the cheap frozen stuff with a crust like cardboard.

Potato is most any form or fashion. Creamy, mashed a particular joy.

Bacon Cheeseburgers with sauteed mushrooms and onions.

Spaghetti with meat sauce.

Cake, partial to chocolate, but most any cake will do.

Peanut Butter and Jelly (usually apply) sandwiches with tall glass of cold milk.

Enchiladas, especially spinach.

Whatchamacallit candy bars.

Grits, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast.

Greek Omlettes.

Fried Chicken. I like KFC but have vowed not to darken their doorstep again. I haven't had Shake n Bake since the kids were kids. I'd forgotten how good that was. Sometimes I soak mine in milk and egg, dredge in bread crumbs, yum.

To name but a few. Friday I got a craving for smothered pork chops, something I rarely eat. But I couldn't get it out of my head, off my tongue. I didn't succumb though. (Yet).

Fruits and Vegetables are NOT comfort food...agreed! Pizza however, tops my list. And wine...always. I think you are missing Bing :(

Let's hope that Bing isn't reading your blog while she is away. Although, I'm sure she knows that as soon as she is out of town the junk food comes out.

I share a couple of your faves: Claussen pickles and peanut butter. Claussen's are the best, imo. The big ones, the small ones, even the sliced ones. I tried to eat the kind that T likes but they just didn't do it for me. As for peanut butter, that's where I am picky, picky. It should be Adams. Salted, creamy is my favorite. I tried eating unsalted for a few years, but it just doesn't satisfy. I eat an english muffin for breakfast every day; one half peanut butter and one half either jelly (apricot or sour cherry) or cheese. Peanut butter and many cheeses go very well together. My favorite combo is peanut butter and havarti.

In general, my comfort foods tend to the salty or tart. I am not a big chocolate lover. If given a choice between a brownie and a lemon bar, the lemon bar will win every time.

My real downfall is chips. I love potato chips. And corn chips. And cheetos.

Baked potatoes are on the comfort food list. Oatmeal, mac n cheese, toast, my own beef stew, onion soup. Mmmmm.... I'm feeling nostalgic and a bit peckish! What's for dinner, sweetheart?

Pizza or beef stew top my list. When I'm missing my Mom I like to make cream of tomato soup and add elbow macaroni to it. :D

Apple Pie with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, macaroni and cheese, cheese toast, pinwheel cookies or moon pies (can you tell I'm from the South?), Chicken Mole, peanut butter banana toast with honey and cinnamon.

Of course, I have none of this in my house because I try to eat healthy, but when the chips are down, the comfort food finds its way to the table...er...my mouth!

I loved this Maria! I'll just give you one: Greek yoghurt with honey. I could eat a whole bowl full of this.
Ok - two: Wholegrain toast with butter and English Marmalade.
My mainstay: a pocketful of almonds.

Comfort drink: Coffee with milk and sugar

Panackelty is my ultimate comfort food (sausages and bacon, a couple of tomatoes cut in half and cooked sliced potatoes all thrown together in a rich onion gravy and served over a slice of white bread to soak up the excess gravy). Mmmm.

Mashed potato with either baked beans or cheese (in our house the potato smasher is known as the chatty basher)!

Chips, as in fries, but got to be big and chunky with lots of salt and vinegar.

No, fruit and veggies don't work as comfort food. Unless you count tomato or leek and potato soup as fruit and veg.

You like black licorice too? I love it!! And I got my 4yo eating black jelly beans at Easter this year. If you eat too many, however, your poo will be green. Just so you know.

I would have almost the same list, actually, except I hate making mashed potatoes, I'm not that big on oatmeal and I've never had a long john with caramel icing, but it sounds like something I'd eat too many of.

Ha!
Anything in sight.
(except PICKLES - HATE them & pickel juice stinks...)ish.
Right now I wish I was at Perkins having pancakes, maple syrup & a spinach, bacon & cheese eggwhite (well, gotta draw the line somewhere) omlette.

Hamburger gravy and mashed potatoes. Pure comfort.

My mom just laughs and shakes her head because my brother and I would both request it for birthdays dinners.

She also makes the world's most amazing lamb chops, which MUST be served with white rice and frozen green peas.

Your list is making me hungry, many of my favorites are on it. I do like fruits and vegetables a lot, but they aren't comfort foods for me. Cheetos, Doritos, a baked potato, licorice snaps and ice cream with maple syrup and chocolate topping, are!

Good gracious do I love pickles. Good gracious do I love grilled cheese.

I highly recommend you try them together. Prepare grilled cheese. Place one perfectly bite-sized hamburger dill chip on top of grilled cheese. Bite. fall in love.
