An ode to oatmeal.

I love oatmeal. All oatmeal. All kinds. My personal favorite is steel cut Irish oatmeal, but I will eat the instant in a pinch. One key:it HAS to be made with milk, not water.

I eat it with a spoon of brown sugar on top and a smattering of raisins. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

And I don't stop at oatmeal. I also like Malto Meal and Cream of Wheat. I'm not picky. As long as it is steamy hot and made with milk, we are good.

I know this is rather odd. Bing and Liv like oatmeal, but they don't pick it as a treat the way that I will. And I suppose that most people would find it strange that in the three digit heat of a Nebraska summer, I will choose a bowl of oatmeal over a bowl of ice cream.

It is Liv's fault. When she was a baby, oatmeal was one of her first foods. She loved it and I had rarely eaten it, so I ate it along with her. We both loved it and ate it many, many times for breakfast AND dinner. Somewhere along the way, she decided that she liked it about once a month and only for breakfast while I decided that I could eat it not once, not twice, but happily three times a day.

Maybe that is why all of my sisters have high cholesterol and I don't. I'm also pretty regular as a rule (except when that colitis thing is going on) and I think oatmeal is to thank for that too.

I just like the sheer coziness of it. In winter, it warms my bones. In summer, it makes me feel full and I don't pig out on cookies.

I like to eat my oatmeal with a book propped up on the table. I take long, leisurely bites of my oatmeal, letting a raisin slip in every other bite, and slowly read. It is peaceful and harmless.

I also like goat milk and water buffalo yogurt. Vanilla is the best. There IS a difference. It isn't as sweet as the other yogurts, it has more of a texture and is a bit sour, but not overly so.

So, thank you, oatmeal, for easing me on down that road we call life.

What are your comfort foods? Anything strange or unusual? C'mon, let it all hang out.

And hey, if you are looking for a really fantastic blog to read, may I suggest Indiscriminate scribbles. It is the kind of writing that makes you travel right along with Alice and stand next to her while she tells you all about this feeling or that memory. I have yet to read her blog in a skimming fashion. I go through it slowly and with such interest. I never just dip my toes in, I jump in all the way and am never sorry. When I get to the end of one of her posts, I sigh because I feel as if I have been on a journey with someone who actually could write the blues. So..give her a go, yes?

And I fell in love with the song, The Promise, by Tracy Chapman on Alice's wonderful blog. Another time where I started crying over a song. I am surprising myself with my tendency to weep over music lately. I went for years being the sort of person who was rarely moved to tears by music. Now, I hear something and it sort of pierces right through my heart....

Oh, and eat your oatmeal!

I so wish I liked oatmeal. Love the smell, but not the taste. Though I've never tried anything but instant. Wouldn't have a clue how to make anything else!

Maria -

I love oatmeal with milk, too. For me, it's Quaker old-fashioned or 5-minute oats made with milk, with brown sugar and either fresh strawberries or raisins and, once in a great while, bananas (I like them, but they don't like me).

Thanks for adding me to your blogroll. I appreciate your support.

hey there, thanks for your comments, I never realised that my word verification could perplex someone so badly, many apologies and I will go right now and get rid of it, maybe more people will talk to me, coz I know enough of them are reading but hiding. Hugs from me and the girls

I just spent yesterday morning eating oatmeal and cinnamon toast at my granny's — it doesn't get much more comforting than that!! I don't like milk on my oatmeal though. I like it thick and hot with cinnamon and sugar, maybe some raisins.

Gee Maria, I'm almost struck speechless by what you said about my blog. You have no idea how much that means to me! I feel like Sally Field, "you like me, you really like me". People close to me have been encouraging me for years now, but I always thought they were just trying to be nice. I've pasted your comments into my notepad and will surely refer to them the next time I feel as though I have nothing of any interest to say.

And yes, The Promise is definitely one of those songs that can always either make you tear up or sigh with contentment!

May your oatmeal be plentiful and your panty liners — durable!

I LOVE OATMEAL.
Steel Cut takes such a long time, but its sooo good.
I usually go for the Quaker Old Fashioned. I can't deal with the instant or quick oats.

Brown sugar, cinnamon, raisins. yes.
And I make it with water. I should try milk sometime.

I love FAGE greek yogurt. I've been dieting and eating the 0% fat variety. The full fat tastes like ice cream, no lie.

Anyway, Gina tried it and said it tasted like sour cream. I just so happened to have a carton of sour cream, so we did a taste test.
You know what? Sour cream tasted way better...hehehehe.
The yogurt is the consistency of sour cream, which is cool. I eat it with Kashi Go Lean Crunch. Gives me terrible gas (the Kashi) but I love it anyway.

Ooooh Oatmeal.
For me it's organic rolled oats with a handful of fruit and nuts thrown in and some cold skimmed or soya milk.
Any time of day.
Yum!

I must agree, Oatmeal is awesome. Along with the Tracy Chapman song. So, I KNOW I will love the blog that you reccommend. Thanks!

Strange and unusual favorite foods? Nope, I'm pretty sure you beat anything I can think of with "water buffalo yogurt." Where do you even find this stuff?

I love oatmeal too, but I can't eat it with milk. Just thinking about milk gets my gag reflex going.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I can't remember how I came upon yours, I believe it was from a comment you left on someone else's blog - but I can not remember who it was.

I'm a big oatmeal fan, myself. Strange, I suppose, in that I tend to like spicy food.

A life without McCann's is too difficult for me to even contemplate ... LOL.

Too bad I don't do PR for Quaker anymore. I'd hire you as a spokesperson :-)

I go through didn't choices. I'll eat oatmeal everyday for a month. Or total cereal. Right now I am stuck on boiled eggs.

I'm too lazy to make anything in the morning so it has to be instant.

I had some this morning.
Steel cut is the best. But Trader Joes instant will do fine.

Oatmeal is the greatest! I also like any type of hot cereal in the morning... noon or night! Here's a really great treat. Chocolate Malt 0 Meal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top!

When the kids were young and I was out of milk one morning, I thought "what the heck"... I put the ice cream on top and it melted not only cooling down the cereal but making it extra creamy!

I love oatmeal, too. For me, its usually the instant kind though. Because I am too lazy to actually cook the good stuff. I like maple/brown sugar. No raisins. Unfortunately my comfort food is ice cream. Mint chocolate chip although any flavor will do in a pinch. I wish I preferred the oatmeal over that, though.

I treat oatmeal the way I do vanilla ice cream, as a canvas upon which to create. Sometimes it is a simple creation (just maple syrup or honey), other times more "traditional" with cinnamon and raisins, and still other times, its an interesting mix with dried cranberries and whatever nuts are on hand, and oh what about dried coconut and a dash of nutmeg. I guess I have a problem....

Ultimate comfort food is probably bread pudding, but it takes so long to make.

A take-me-back to childhood dish that makes me feel good is a can of hominy (either white or yellow, it doesn't matter), warmed up and topped with butter and black pepper. My wife won't touch the stuff!

I'll stick to ice cream....and cookies. :)

Weird, I commented earlier, but it disappeared.

Anyway, I can't seem to handle the texture of oatmeal, but I love salmon.

I love oatmeal in the winter, but won't touch it in the summer. Favorite comfort food is definitely macaroni and cheese, but I can't remember the last time I ate it.

I LOVE oatmeal. It's the breakfast of choice for me, with raisens and soy milk on it. It's got to be the real stuff, though, not that instant junk. My major comfort food is a baked potato with broccoli and cheese on it.
